Measure Your Kitchen

Whether designing your dream kitchen from scratch or revamping an existing one, the best-laid plans start with proper measurements. Here are some great tips for accurate measuring and space planning.

Tips for Measuring Your Kitchen

1. Ensure accuracy. You’ll need a tape measure, straight edge and graph paper. (Download Graph Here)

2. Measure clockwise. Record the overall length of each wall, working to your right around the room. Label walls, windows and doors with numbers.

3. Get the width and height. Take horizontal measurements of walls at 36-inch height. Record vertical measurements floor to windowsill, from windowsill to top of window, from top of window to ceiling, then from floor to ceiling.

4. Find your center. Indicate the center-line of all permanent features in all measurements including wall oven, range, sinks, windows, doors, closets, ducts and outlets.

5. Include the trim. When measuring doors and windows, the casing is considered part of the door or window. Measure from one side to the other of the door or window trim, then measure from the outside of the trim to the middle of the window or door.

Calculator Use

Use this calculator to find the square footage, square yardage, square meters or acres for a building, home, garden or construction project. Calculate square footage, yardage, meters and acres for landscape, flooring, carpet, or tiling projects to estimate area and the amount of material you will need. Also calculate the cost of materials when you enter the price per square foot, price per square yard or price per square meter.

Price is entered in the fields, for example,

price: $3.00 per: 1 square unit: foot (ft²)
meaning $3.00 per 1 square foot

or
price: $25.00 per: 1000 square unit: foot (ft²)
meaning $25.00 per 1000 square feet

How to Calculate Square Footage

Square footage is area expressed in square feet. Likewise, square yardage is area expressed in square yards.  Square meters is also a common measure of area.

Assume you have a rectangular area such as a room and, for example, you want to calculate the square footage area for flooring or carpet.

The way to calculate a rectangular area is by measuring the length and width of your area then multiplying those two numbers together to get the area in feet squared (ft2). If you have on oddly shaped area, such as an L-shape, split it into square or rectangular sections and treat them as two separate areas.

Calculate the area of each section then add them together for your total. If your measurements are in different units, say feet and inches, you can first convert those values to feet, then multiply them together to get the square footage of the area.
